Cyprus has been divided into two by the "green line" since the Turkish invasion in 1974. Turkish Cypriots and mainland Turks occupy a third of Cyprus in the North, and the South is occupied by Greek Cypriots and other minorities.

There are also a couple of British bases in the South, and a United Nations peace keeping force by the "green line".

Prior to the invasion Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots lived together in harmony. The current situation is far from satisfactory and there is hope for a peaceful re-unification by both sides and talks have been taking place since the invasion.

In 2003 the borders have been relaxed and day visits to the North and South can be made for a small fee.
